Intervista a Laura Brouwers, alias Cyarine

Laura Brouwers, alias Cyarine, è una delle illustratrici più famose di internet. Inizia a disegnare in tenera età, ma ha iniziato a farlo in modo più serio all’età di tredici anni. La fantastica sarà ospite al FantaExpo (6, 7, 8 e 9 settembre a Salerno) conosciamola meglio grazie a questa intervista.

1.     When did your passion for drawing come?

- My passion for being creative was always encouraged by my mom, I spent a lot of time by myself and really enjoyed this. This made it so that when I was in healthcare for the majority of my teenage years, I spent most time I wasn’t in active treatment drawing! Of course this was a tough time for me in my life, but it’s given me a career without schooling, I don’t think I would have been an illustrator if I had gone to school.

1. Quando è nata la tua passione per il disegno?

-La mia passione per essere creativa è stata sempre incoraggiata da mia mamma, ho passato molto tempo da sola e l’ho apprezzato molto. Questo ha fatto sì che, quando ho trascorso la maggior parte dell’adolescenza nell’assistenza sanitaria, ho passato la maggior parte del tempo in cui non ero nel trattamento attivo disegnando! Ovviamente questo è stato un momento difficile della mia vita, ma mi ha dato una carriere senza formazione scolastica: non penso che sarei diventata un’illustratrice se avessi frequentato la scuola. 

2.     Why did you choose Cyarine as your nickname?

- Cyarin is a combination of two hues of blue “Cyan” and “Aquamarine” in dutch, my friend once gave a bunch of our friend group at the time color nicknames, like the power rangers. My real name is Laura and blue in dutch is Blauw, so calling me “Blauwra” was quite funny to them.

2. Perché hai scelto Cyarine come tuo nickname?

- Cyarin è la combinazione di due tonalità di blu “ciano” e “verde acqua” in olandese. Un mio amico una volta assegnò un mucchio di colori del tempo come soprannomi al nostro gruppo di amici, come i power ranger. Il mio vero nome è Laura e blu in olandese è Blauw, quindi chiamarmi  “Blauwra” era piuttosto divertente per loro.

3.     What did you study to achieve your goals?
- Like I said, I didn’t get schooling, this includes high school. I dropped out after elementary school and struggling to get through the first bits of high school at a few different schools. I was then put in 24/7 healthcare until I was an adult, it was a whole lot of rules influencing that I couldn’t go back even when I was much better. Luckily, building your skills and portfolio can be achieved without formal schooling, so I’m still working hard to get to where I want, I wouldn’t say I’ve achieved my goals, but I have achieved more than what my initial prognosis of independence was, which is equally nice and terrifying, haha. Who knows what’s next!

3. Cosa hai studiato per raggiungere i tuoi obiettivi?

- Come ho già detto, non ho frequentato la scuola, questo include il liceo. Ho abbandonato dopo la scuola elementare e lottato per superare le prime parti del liceo a poche scuole diverse. Sono stata poi messa 24 ore su 24, 7 giorni su 7, in assistenza sanitaria fino all’età adulta. Furono un sacco di regole che mi influenzavano, non potevo tornare indietro nemmeno quando stavo molto meglio. Fortunatamente, costruendo le tue abilità, il tuo bagaglio può essere raggiunto senza un’istruzione formale, per questo sto ancora lavorando duro per raggiungere quello che voglio. Non direi che ho raggiunto i miei obiettivi, ma ho ottenuto molto più di quella che era la mia prognosi iniziale di indipendenza, che è altrettanto bello e terrificante, haha. Chi sa cosa succederà!?

4.     Can you explain to me how you work?

- This might be a bit of a big question, it varies so much! I tend to not plan when I work unless its for a client, creativity can’t be forced, I try to be as effective as I can as opposed to drawing as much as possible, as I damaged my nerves by doing the latter in my early drawing years. I usually look up visual inspiration after getting a general idea in my head, then start sketching on paper or digitally, depending on the complexity of the piece. (I love sketching on paper, but sometimes I need the freedom of being able to experiment more without ruining my paper with erasers) and often load the sketch into my digital workspace to finish the piece in a painterly style. I work in one layer for most of my process, excluding effect layers or if I’m doing client work on a character that requires separate elements.

4. Puoi spiegarmi come lavori?

-  Questa potrebbe essere un po’ una grande domande, è così varia! Tendo a non pianificare quando lavoro a meno che sia per un cliente, la creatività non può essere forzata. Cerco di essere efficace come posso al contrario disegno il più possibile, così ho danneggiato i miei nervi nei primi anni del disegno. Di solito cerco l’ispirazione visiva dopo avere un’idea generale nella mia testa, poi inizio a disegnare su carta o digitalmente, dipende dalla complessità del lavoro (Amo disegnare sulla carta, ma a volte ho bisogno della libertà di poter sperimentare di più senza rovinare la mia carta con gomme da cancellare). Spesso carico il disegno nel mio spazio di lavoro digitale per finire il pezzo in uno stile pittorico. Lavoro in uno strato per la maqgior parte dei miei disegni, escludendo i livelli dell'effetto o se sto realizzando un lavoro per un cliente su un personaggio che richiede elementi separati.

5.     What are you working on?

- For now, besides personal work, no big client concept works. I’m working on one personal project I’m hoping to announce soon however, I can’t yet!

5. Su cosa stai lavorando?

- Per ora, oltre al lavoro personale, nessun concetto di grande cliente funziona.

  Sto lavorando su un progetto personale che spero di annunciare presto tuttavia, non posso ancora!

6.     Have you ever been to Italy?

- A LOT when I was young. Probably like 20 times? I mostly visited the north though, and I loved it there! I remember one particular place we stayed at a lot, an older lady had a vegetable/fruit shop there, when we walked by she would teach us how to count in Italian, say “ciao bella!” and give us free cherries. I also remember crashing my bike into her shop sign once, I wasn’t used to having to break after coming down from a hill after growing up in a flat country like the Netherlands, LOL.

6. Sei mai stata in Italia?

-MOLTO quando ero giovane. Probabilmente 20 volte? Ho visitato soprattutto il nord comunque, l’ho amato! Ricordo un posto particolare in cui passammo molto tempo. Una signora anziana aveva un negozio di frutta/ verdura lì, quando camminammo vicino lei ci voleva insegnare a contare in italiano, dire “ciao bella” e ci diede ciliegie gratis.  Ricordo anche che una volta mi sono schiantata con la mia bici sul cartello del suo negozio, non ero abituata a fermarmi dopo essere scesa da una collina dopo essere cresciuta in un paese piatto come i Paesi Bassi, LOL.

7.     Do you like pizza?

- Maybe a bit too much, my favorite is caprese pizza but I can never get one good enough in the Netherlands, so I’m planning on eating a lot while I’m there again!

7. Ti piace la pizza?

- Forse un po’ troppo, la mia preferita è la piazza caprese ma non riesco mai a mangiarne una abbastanza buona nei Paesi Bassi, per questo sto pianificando di mangiarne molte mentre sarò di nuovo lì!

8.     What do you expect from your experience at the Fantaexpo?

-I’m just hoping to meet as many people as I can, hopefully be able to visit other artist’s booths and enjoy laughs and conversations about art with new people. I tend to go with the flow when it comes to conventions when I haven’t been before, but I heard really good stuff so I’m not worried it’ll be great!

8. Cosa ti aspetti dalla tua esperienzaa al Fantaexopo?

- Spero solo di incontrare quante più persone possibili, magari di poter visitare gli stand di altri artisti e godere di risate e conversazioni sull’arte con nuove persone. Tendo ad andare con il flusso quando si tratta di convention a cui non sono mai stata prima, ma ho sentito cose davvero buone quindi non sono preoccupata, sarà fantastico!

9.What are your future projects?

I have some concepts I’d like to work on personally, if I ever find a writer I can bond with well, I want to do something with my demon characters badly, I also got to know a writer who’s working on a personal project of his I’m seeing if I can help with too. For now, I’m planning to build my own work as much as I can, I had a few inquiries, some of which absolute dream companies, I was honored to get but feeling unready to take on. In a few years, I hope to work in a studio, I’m not cut out for freelance work and love to work in teams over solo!

      9.  Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?

Ho alcuni concetti su cui mi piacerebbe lavorare personalmente, se mai a trovare uno scrittore con cui posso legare bene… voglio assolutamente fare qualcosa con i miei personaggi demoni. Ho anche avuto modo di conoscere uno scrittore che sta lavorando su un suo progetto personale vedrò anche se posso  aiutare. Per ora, sto pianificando di costruire il mio lavoro il più possibile. Ho avuto alcune richieste, alcune delle quali aziende da sogno in assoluto, sono stata onorata di riceverle ma mi sono sentita impreparata ad assumerle. Tra pochi anni, spero di lavorare in uno studio, non sono tagliata per lavoro autonomo e amo lavorare in squadra invece che da sola!
