Il film, ispirato all’omonima e acclamata trilogia letteraria di Alexandra Bracken, sarà al cinema dal 14 agosto
Basato sulla serie di libri di Alexandra Bracken, Darkest Minds segue la storia della sedicenne Ruby, interpretata da Amandla Stenberg (Hunger Games).
Dopo che una malattia sconosciuta ha ucciso il 98% dei bambini, il 2% dei sopravvissuti sviluppa misteriosamente dei superpoteri. Proprio a causa delle loro straordinarie abilità, i ragazzi vengono dichiarati una minaccia dal governo e rinchiusi in campi di internamento. È proprio Ruby che sceglie di radunare i suoi compagni e scappare dal campo, ma arriva il momento in cui fuggire non è più sufficiente: i ragazzi dovranno resistere e combattere contro gli adulti che li hanno traditi.

THE DARKEST MINDS è il primo film live-action della regista Jennifer Yuh Nelson, nota per
avere diretto due episodi della serie “Kung
Fu Panda”. Il film è un adattamento dell’omonimo romanzo best-seller di Alexandra
Bracken, il primo di una trilogia che comprende The Darkest Minds, Never Fade e In the Afterlight.
Il film è interpretato da Amandla Stenberg (“The Hunger Games”) nel ruolo di Ruby
Daly, Harris Dickinson (“Beach Rats”)
è Liam Stewart, Miya Cech (“American

distribuito nelle sale il 14 agosto 2018.
Quando Ruby si era
svegliata il giorno del suo decimo compleanno, qualcosa in lei era cambiato.
Qualcosa di abbastanza allarmante da spingere i genitori a chiuderla in garage
e chiamare la polizia. Qualcosa che l’aveva fatta arrivare a Thurmond, un duro
“campo di riabilitazione” del governo. Anche se Ruby era scampata all’epidemia
che aveva ucciso la maggior parte dei bambini in America, la misteriosa
malattia aveva lasciato in lei e negli altri sopravvissuti qualcosa di gran
lunga peggiore: spaventose capacità che non erano in grado di controllare.
Ora, a sedici anni,
Ruby è considerata pericolosa. Quando la verità che aveva celato viene a galla,
riesce per un pelo ad evadere da Thurmond. La ragazza fugge,
alla disperata ricerca dell’unico rifugio sicuro per quelli come lei: East
River. Ruby si unisce a un gruppo di ragazzi, anch’essi in fuga dai “campi”.
Liam, il loro coraggioso leader, è molto preso da lei ma, per quanto lo
desideri ardentemente, Ruby non può rischiare di avvicinarsi troppo. Non dopo
quello che è successo ai suoi genitori. Quando arrivano a East River, nulla è
come appare, men che meno il misterioso leader del rifugio.
Ma ci sono altre forze
in gioco, persone disposte a tutto pur di usare Ruby nella loro lotta contro il
governo. Ruby dovrà compiere una scelta terribile, una scelta che potrebbe
portarla a rinunciare all’unica possibilità di avere una vita degna di essere
vissuta.

celebre romanzo per ragazzi, THE DARKEST
MINDS prende il via in un’America turbolenta in cui il 98% della popolazione
infantile è morto per una misteriosa malattia e il 2% di sopravvissuti,
ritenuto nemico dello stato, è costretto alla fuga.
“Il film parla di
giovani in grado di sopravvivere grazie ai loro poteri ed è un film d’azione,
ma è anche pieno di sentimento”, dichiara la
regista Jennifer Yuh Nelson.
In THE DARKEST MINDS gli spettatori si
identificheranno nei conflitti dei personaggi e si immergeranno nell’incubo in
cui vivono. “Volevamo trasmettere la sensazione di una realtà attuale che
riconosciamo”, afferma la Nelson. “I poteri dei ragazzi sono unici, in
contrapposizione con una realtà altrimenti normale. Provate a immaginare di uscire
ora per strada e di vedere qualcuno che compie azioni straordinarie. L’idea era
di non collocare il film in un periodo storico distante o in un luogo oscuro e
futuristico, ma di far credere agli spettatori che tutto ciò che vedono potrebbe
accadere”.
“Oggi più che mai siamo consapevoli della nostra
mortalità”, dichiara Gwendoline Christie, che interpreta la cacciatrice di
taglie Lady Jane. “Viviamo in un’epoca turbolenta e, di conseguenza, queste
storie distopiche sono più che mai importanti nella nostra vita, dato il loro
potenziale di divenire realtà”.
“THE DARKEST MINDS è stato un viaggio interessante: abbiamo
acquistato i diritti del libro cinque anni fa, quando la 21 Laps, la mia
società, era nota prevalentemente per la produzione di commedie e film per la
famiglia di grande successo commerciale”, afferma Shawn Levy. “Ma abbiamo
sempre avuto in mente di entrare in uno spazio diverso, che io chiamerei ‘genere
ancorato ai personaggi’”.
“Nella storia c’è un
tema senza tempo”, aggiunge il produttore Dan Levine. “È un tema universale, incentrato
su alcuni bambini che crescono, diventano adolescenti e scoprono di essere
diversi. La gente non li capisce, specialmente gli adulti e il governo, quindi
vengono rinchiusi in campi speciali. La storia segue questi bambini mentre
crescono e diventano dei giovani adulti in grado di stare in piedi e
proteggersi da soli. Penso che la paura di non riuscire a trovare il proprio
posto nella società e la ricerca dell’accettazione ci seguano anche nell’età
adulta”.
“La storia parla di un mondo non molto diverso dal nostro”,
osserva Amandla Stenberg, che interpreta Ruby Daly. “Ma si sono verificati alcuni
eventi funesti e la maggioranza della popolazione infantile è morta. I bambini sopravvissuti
hanno sviluppato delle abilità mentali inspiegabili e, a causa di esse, gli
adulti li temono e li hanno confinati in alcuni campi. La storia si focalizza
su una ragazza che, dopo essere fuggita dal campo in cui è relegata, trova una
sua famiglia nel mondo esterno”.
“Chiunque abbia vissuto l’adolescenza può immedesimarsi
nella storia”, dichiara Levine. “Questo è un elemento che distingue veramente il
film. Quando le persone guarderanno il trailer e poi andranno al cinema, si
renderanno conto che il film parla del presente e di qualcosa di molto reale,
che potrebbe accadere prima o poi, nonostante gli elementi fantasy e il tema
dei poteri straordinari. A noi la storia dà l’idea di essere reale, radicata
nella realtà e di poter avere luogo non in un futuro distopico, caratterizzato
da un nuovo ordine mondiale, ma anche domani”.
“Per me ciò che ha
reso speciale THE DARKEST
MINDS è la possibilità di osservare la storia da una prospettiva particolare”,
aggiunge la Nelson. “È abbastanza scontato che un certo genere di film sia
classificato con l’etichetta ‘per ragazzi’, perciò volevo realizzare qualcosa
di inaspettato, qualcosa di nuovo. E THE
DARKEST MINDS è innovativo anche nella sceneggiatura, caratterizzata
dalla presenza di forti legami emotivi. I personaggi sono reali e riconoscibili
e desideri trascorrere con loro un po’ di tempo. L’azione poi è straordinaria.
Ma per me ciò che fa la differenza è il cuore emotivo della vicenda”.
“Vi sono diversi temi ricorrenti nella storia”, afferma
Levy. “È un film incentrato
sul senso di appartenenza che, nel nostro caso, riguarda un gruppo di bambini dotati di poteri particolari. Ma non c’è
nessuno che non abbia dovuto fare i conti con la ricerca della propria identità.
È una ricerca che spesso raggiunge il punto culminante durante l’adolescenza,
che è di fatto il punto focale del nostro film”.
“Il film parla di un piccolo gruppo di ragazzi dotati di
poteri sovraumani, di cui ancora non capiscono la portata, che si ritrovano
insieme, accomunati dal fatto di essere in fuga dalle autorità. E parla del
modo in cui fanno affidamento l’uno sull’altro ed entrano in sintonia tra di loro
mentre cercano altri ragazzi dotati. Anche se tratta eventi e temi forti, il
film è fondamentalmente improntato alla speranza, la speranza che sia possibile
avere dei legami ed essere accettati”, conclude Levy.
“THE DARKEST MINDS trascende le
diverse età dei personaggi”, afferma la Nelson. “Non è un film sull’essere
adolescenti. Tutti abbiamo vissuto la fase in cui non ci siamo sentiti del
tutto a nostro agio con ciò che eravamo. Il punto è affrontare ciò che non ci piace
di noi stessi, che è visto come un difetto, e crescere fino ad abbracciare
questo lato. È riuscire a penetrare ciò che ci rende unici e usarlo come un
punto di forza. La storia segue una ragazza che, all’inizio, è impotente,
fondamentalmente spaventata e si vergogna di ciò che è. Seguendola fino alla
fine, la vediamo crescere e diventare una persona forte e autonoma, in grado di
fare cose di cui non pensava di essere capace. Chiunque può identificarsi in
questo percorso”.
Con la sua esperienza
nell’animazione (la serie “Kung Fu
Panda”) e la passione per l’azione, la Nelson è stata la scelta ideale per
dirigere un film d’avventura con una protagonista femminile.
“Abbiamo incontrato molti registi per THE DARKEST
MINDS”, ammette Levy. “Fin dall’inizio, ed era il nostro sogno, dato
che questo film è un eroico viaggio di emancipazione, ci sarebbe piaciuto trovare
un registra visionario che fosse anche una donna, con la capacità di arricchire
il film grazie a una conoscenza profondamente viscerale e intima dei temi trattati
e di alcune delle esperienze descritte. Abbiamo incontrato Jennifer Nelson, che
proviene dal mondo dell’animazione e ha diretto due film della serie ‘Kung Fu Panda’ e, pur essendo ovvio il
tono diverso di quei film, abbiamo capito che per noi era la scelta migliore”.
Il desiderio della Nelson di rappresentare Ruby, con il
suo spirito combattivo e il grande coraggio, nel viaggio di sopravvivenza e di
ricerca di una famiglia, nasce dalla sua attitudine a dare vita a mondi
fantastici e mai visti, come testimonia il lavoro realizzato in “Kung Fu Panda 2 e 3”.
“Jen ha una visione davvero brillante”, afferma Levine. “È
una storyboard artist e i pannelli che ha realizzato per il film sono
bellissimi. Ognuno di essi è un’opera d’arte e tutti colpiscono per scala e
dimensioni. Ciò di cui la gente non si rende subito conto è che Jen è
particolarmente dotata e perspicace”.
“A lei piace esplorare il lato meno prevedibile delle
cose e ha un’estetica straordinaria, come è evidente dagli storyboard. Ogni
immagine è chiaramente delineata nella sua mente e così lo è ogni ripresa. È
stato un processo incredibile da osservare”, spiega il direttore della fotografia
Kramer Morgenthau.
“Ciò che è magnifico nel film è il connubio di tanti
elementi diversi e l’unico modo per ottenere un quadro d’insieme organico è
attraverso una voce potente come quella di Jen che, avendo un’idea molto precisa
di ciò che vuole, ha creato storyboard per ogni singola inquadratura e ha
tracciato un elenco dettagliato per ogni singola ripresa”, aggiunge Morgenthau.
“Jen è concisa riguardo a ciò che vuole e molto prolifica nel linguaggio
visivo, caratteristica che ha sviluppato nel mondo dell’animazione”.
I ROMANZI DI ALEXANDRA BRACKEN
La regista aveva una chiara idea di ciò che costituisce
il cuore del romanzo The Darkest Minds. “Penso sia un’ottima storia. C’è
una ragione se questa serie di libri ha così tanti fan: i lettori si
identificano nei personaggi, sono in sintonia con il messaggio e con il
concetto alla base dei romanzi. L’eccitazione dei fan è stata contagiosa. Ho
letto molte sceneggiature originali interessanti, ma in questa c’è qualcosa di
veramente profondo”.
La Bracken appare per la prima volta in un film,
recitando in una scena insieme a Skylan Brooks che interpreta Chubs. “Fortunatamente
abbiamo fatto le prove, perché a un certo punto stavo per crollare. Non credo
di avere la stoffa dell’attrice professionista ma, per il ruolo che ho
interpretato, penso di essermela cavata”, commenta ridendo l’autrice.
Ricordando il tempo trascorso sul set, la Bracken spiega:
“La cosa più emozionante che la presenza sul set mi ha trasmesso è stata la
sensazione concreta di vedere l’adattamento del mio libro prendere forma. È il
prodotto del duro lavoro e dell’immaginazione di tantissime persone che hanno
profuso il cuore e l’anima per raggiungere l’obiettivo. Tutti gli attori hanno
centrato le dinamiche relazionali, cosa che ero molto curiosa di vedere. È il
risultato di un lavoro di squadra. Ognuno ha avuto il proprio ruolo nel
progetto e questo è semplicemente straordinario”.
IL CASTING
“La varietà nel cast è
fondamentale”, afferma Levy. “Jennifer voleva
degli attori che risultassero autentici e non semplici sagome prive di spessore.
Voleva un cast eterogeneo per riflettere la diversità presente nel paese. Penso che questa
sia una componente fondamentale in un film incentrato sulle differenze e che ne
promuove l’accettazione e il sostegno”.
“La scelta di Ruby è stata una decisione di capitale
importanza per il film, dato che è presente in quasi ogni scena. Devo ammettere
di conoscere Amandla da diversi anni perché frequentava la stessa scuola delle
mie figlie maggiori. Quindi l’ho osservata negli spettacoli teatrali
organizzati a scuola e, già a quattordici anni, era evidente quanto fosse speciale.
Non solo ha una forte presenza sul palcoscenico e sullo schermo, come abbiamo
visto in ‘Hunger Games’ dove
interpreta Rue, ma quando era una Teen Idol l’ho sentita cantare Beauty School Dropout in ‘Grease’ e anche lì era fantastica!”.
Amandla è profonda nel modo di pensare e di percepire e
si è rispecchiata nel personaggio con la giusta capacità di celarsi senza rivelare
tutto di sé in ogni scena, il che è molto importante in questo film. Amandla ha
la qualità di essere enigmatica. È intensa e intelligente e, in definitiva, ha
una forza reale che la rende perfetta per il ruolo”.
“Il personaggio è piuttosto complesso”, afferma Amandla Stenberg,
“ed è anche abbastanza introverso, così come descritto nel libro. Perciò, per
dare vita a Ruby sullo schermo, abbiamo dovuto pensare a varie opzioni per
mostrare tutti i lati del carattere, dato che non possiamo penetrare nella sua mente
come invece avviene quando si legge il romanzo. Penso sia piena di passione e
capace di tenere testa alle situazioni. Sa ciò che vuole e questo mi piace
molto di lei. Ma è anche una ragazza riflessiva e riservata. Direi che mi
somiglia molto”.
Nel parlare di ciò che l’ha attratta verso il progetto,
l’attrice dichiara: “La trama e il suo significato mi hanno immediatamente
emozionato. Penso vi siano alcuni paralleli tra la storia e il mondo in cui
viviamo”.
Harris Dickinson, scelto per interpretare Liam, è stato
felice di unirsi al progetto: “Ecco ciò che mi piace nella sceneggiatura: è
radicata nella realtà e i temi trattati ci riportano a ciò che conta veramente,
vale a dire l’amicizia, la famiglia, il sostegno e, in più, lottare per ciò in
cui si crede”.
“Il personaggio di Liam ha guidato una rivolta ed è in fuga”, spiega Levy.
“Si mostra profondamente protettivo nei confronti di Zu, una ragazza che è evasa
insieme a lui. Avevamo quindi bisogno di qualcuno che esprimesse forza e avesse
presenza fisica, oltre ad essere credibile nella storia d’amore, perché
l’elemento romantico in THE DARKEST MINDS è uno degli
aspetti più importanti nel film. E la storia d’amore tra Ruby e Liam nasce e
cresce lentamente”.
“Il film è incentrato sulla ricerca del rifugio sicuro in
cui vivono i ragazzi che, come loro, sono fuggiti dai campi”, prosegue Levy. “È
un luogo in cui, apparentemente, i ragazzi vivono liberi, sotto la guida di
Clancy (interpretato da Patrick Gibson), un personaggio fondamentale, che
gestisce con gentilezza e carisma questo avamposto utopistico (che potrebbe
somigliare a quelli descritti ne ‘Il
signore delle mosche’ o in ‘Maze
Runner’). Patrick riesce a conferire al ruolo proprio quel carisma. Si
potrebbe anche prospettare un triangolo amoroso tra Clancy, Ruby e Liam. Vogliamo
incuriosire il pubblico facendo sorgere il dubbio su chi Ruby sceglierà alla
fine. Sia Harris sia Patrick, a parte essere due bei ragazzi, hanno fascino e
sono molto convincenti sullo schermo, tanto che il triangolo amoroso
rappresenta un aspetto particolarmente intrigante della storia”.
Nel viaggio verso il rifugio sicuro, Ruby e Liam sono
accompagnati da altri due personaggi: Zu, interpretata da Miya Cech, e Chubs, interpretato
da Skylan Brooks.
“Zu è una bambina di nove-dieci anni e Miya è stata una rivelazione: è particolarmente
dotata in un’età in cui raramente troviamo grandi attrici”, dichiara Levy. “Durante
l’audizione, il suo viso era molto espressivo. Il personaggio non parla quasi
mai e quindi non è facile rappresentarlo. C’è bisogno di qualcuno in grado di esprimersi
senza parole. E Miya, che è anche molto professionale, considerando la giovane
età, conferisce un’espressività commovente a Zu. Il personaggio, come scopriamo
man mano che la storia progredisce, ha subito un vero trauma, di gran lunga
peggiore di quanto chiunque della sua età dovrebbe mai sopportare”.
Dopo avere letto la storia, Miya ha spiegato: “Riesco quasi a immaginare di
essere lei e ho trovato che fosse molto espressiva, proprio come me”.
“Fai il tifo per questa bambina”, aggiunge Levy, “e capisci perché Liam sia
così aggressivamente protettivo nel ruolo di fratello maggiore”.
Chubs è l’altro compagno di
viaggio. “Chubs non solo è un personaggio
autentico, così come lo sono gli altri”, afferma Levy, “ma in più emana un
senso di leggerezza. È molto diretto nell’approccio e, quando vede che qualcosa
sta nascendo tra Ruby e Liam, ne parla apertamente, anche se mette gli altri a
disagio”.
“Penso ci sia bisogno di questa leggerezza non solo nel
mondo, ma proprio in questo film, caratterizzato da temi pesanti e da scene e
sequenze molto intense. Come spettatore, sono grato che il mio ruolo
rappresenti una piccola valvola di sfogo per alleggerire la tensione, cosa che
avviene attraverso l’umorismo. Ma non è un umorismo greve, non è sciocco, anzi è
piuttosto arguto. Ecco il tratto distintivo di Chubs: lo spirito brillante che
accompagna questa famiglia virtuale lungo il viaggio”.
“I film che mi piacciono di più sono quelli in cui
l’umorismo non si manifesta attraverso battute o spiritosaggini, ma scaturisce
dalle interazioni, dai conflitti e dal disagio dei personaggi, perché anche il
disagio può essere divertente”.
Due personaggi femminili molto diversi completano il cast:
Cate, una dottoressa che cerca di aiutare Ruby, e Lady Jane, una cacciatrice prezzolata
di bambini.
“Sapevo fin dall’inizio di volere Mandy
Moore per il ruolo di Cate”, dichiara Levy. “Avevamo bisogno di una persona forte
ma che esprimesse anche un calore immediato, palpabile e reale. Questo ci
serviva per Cate, che è una specie di salvatrice, e Mandy rende istantaneamente
credibile il personaggio”.
“Lady Jane è una cacciatrice di
taglie e, sinceramente, appena è stato fatto il nome di Gwendoline, che abbiate
visto o meno ‘Il trono di spade’ (Game of Thrones) o ‘Star Wars – Il risveglio della forza’ (Star Wars: Episode VII –
The Force Awakens), non ci sono stati dubbi. Lei non solo ha una presenza
imponente, formidabile e unica, ma come attrice possiede un’ampia gamma
espressiva”.
“Lady Jane è
una cacciatrice solitaria, sempre in viaggio alla ricerca di bambini e ragazzi fuggiti
dai campi. Deve essere spaventosa, ma noi volevamo che facesse paura e
apparisse minacciosa in un modo diverso e interessante. E, qualunque cosa
faccia, Gwendoline Christie coglie nel segno”.
Emozionata di essere stata scelta per il progetto, la Christie spiega: “Dopo
avere letto la sceneggiatura, ho provato la netta sensazione che la storia sia
strettamente connessa alla nostra epoca e al quadro politico che, in tutto il
mondo, coinvolge i rifugiati con problematiche gravi, sconvolgenti e orrende. In
termini di informazione e comunicazione, stiamo iniziando, almeno spero, ad
entrare maggiormente in contatto con altri esseri umani che sono all’apparenza
diversi da noi e a riconoscere che quelle differenze non sono così grandi, dopo
tutto. E che possiamo, spero, vedere l’umanità negli altri e capire che cosa
significa avere bisogno di conforto, di un rifugio, della libertà e,
ovviamente, dell’amore”, afferma l’attrice.
“È come se Lady Jane avesse un interessante
dilemma morale. È inglese ma è bloccata sul territorio americano perché le
frontiere sono state chiuse a causa dell’epidemia. La donna pensa che, se
riuscirà a circoscrivere e arginare il problema dei bambini e a guadagnare
abbastanza denaro con le taglie, potrà tornare a casa. Tutto ciò, ovviamente, a
spese dei bambini”, spiega la Christie.
“Lady Jane è un personaggio importante nel libro”, aggiunge Levine. “E
credo che al pubblico piacerà la presenza di Gwendoline nel film”.
I COLORI (BLU, VERDE, ARANCIO,
ROSSO E ORO)
Durante le riprese di THE DARKEST MINDS, centinaia di bambini vestiti con camici color
oro, blu e verde sfilano correndo lungo un vicolo buio, appena illuminato dai
minacciosi lampi di luce della sorveglianza. Le sirene di allarme risuonano
nella notte segnalando un’insurrezione, mentre i soldati inseguono i bambini e
li spingono verso un angolo della recinzione elettrificata. La neve cade e
l’oscurità avvolge Harris Dickinson nei panni di Liam e Miya Cech che, al suo
fianco, interpreta Zu. Liam attinge dai suoi poteri e fa crollare la recinzione.
Nel frattempo, Ruby (Amandla
Stenberg) osserva con orrore la visione del flashback che rivela la gravità
della situazione in cui si trovano i bambini. Essi rappresentano una piccola parte
del 2% di sopravvissuti a una misteriosa epidemia che ha ucciso il 98% dei
bambini americani e le autorità li considerano un pericolo per la società.
La scena richiede la massima
precisione da parte del team di veterani delle sequenze speciali, guidato da Jack
Gill e dal supervisore degli effetti Michael Lantieri, per rappresentare la
tensione, la paura e le emozioni che pervadono il film.
Per prima cosa, i
realizzatori hanno dovuto ideare una visione chiara dei poteri di ciascun
bambino, per poi definire come mettere in pratica le sequenze e gli effetti necessari.
“Abbiamo fatto in modo
che i poteri apparissero reali, mostrandoli come se i bambini li possedessero
realmente, anziché ricorrere solo ad esplosioni e lampi. Volevamo dare la
sensazione che essi scaturissero letteralmente dai bambini, ancora ignari di
come fare per controllarli”, afferma Levine.
“Volevamo mostrare che
cosa accadrebbe a questi bambini se, una volta raggiunta una certa età,
sviluppassero improvvisamente dei poteri, senza riuscire a controllarli, e
quanto tutto ciò apparirebbe loro spaventoso”.
“Alcuni dei colori attribuiti
ai bambini sono più pericolosi di altri. E, dato che nella nostra società i
pregiudizi portano ad etichettare le persone, questo per me è un altro tema del
libro in cui le persone, in particolare coloro che sentono di essere stati
trattati ingiustamente, possono rispecchiarsi, identificandosi nei bambini
segregati secondo il colore di appartenenza e l’abilità che possiedono”, dichiara Levine.
“Penso che questo libro mostri come, in definitiva, ciò
che la gente vede come un ostacolo o una differenza, sia in realtà un potere”.
Arancio è
il colore dei telepatici. Ruby (Amandla Stenberg), classificata con questo
colore, sviluppa la capacità di leggere nella mente, d’influenzare le azioni e
i pensieri delle persone, di alterarne o cancellarne i ricordi e di cambiarne i
sentimenti. Anche Clancy Gray (interpretato da Patrick Gibson) è classificato
Arancio e sviluppa capacità telepatiche.
Oro è il colore
di coloro che hanno poteri elettrocinetici. Zu (Miya Cech), classificata con
questo colore, sviluppa la capacità di creare e controllare l’elettricità.
Questa capacità è considerata una delle più pericolose.
Verde è il colore
di chi ha poteri mentali e intellettuali superiori. Sebbene nei libri della
serie Chubs sia classificato Blu (telecinetico), i realizzatori hanno deciso di
conferirgli le abilità dei Verdi, in modo da avere nel gruppo tutte e quattro
le tipologie di poteri. Nel film Chubs (Skylan Brooks) sviluppa delle capacità
eccezionali come risolutore di problemi e una memoria fotografica formidabile.
Blu è il colore
dei telecinetici. Liam (Harris Dickinson) è classificato con questo colore e
sviluppa la capacità di spostare gli oggetti con la mente.
Rosso è il colore
di quelli che hanno poteri pirocinetici. Il Rosso identifica coloro che hanno
l’abilità di creare e manipolare il fuoco. Hanno quindi un potenziale
distruttivo immenso e sono considerati tra i ragazzi più pericolosi. Per lo
stunt coordinator Jack Gill quest’abilità è stata la più complessa da rappresentare.
SEQUENZE
SPECIALI E AZIONE
Per trasferire i poteri psicologici dal libro al grande schermo, la Nelson ha
lavorato a stretto contatto con Gill.
“Jen coglie tutto al volo e questa è una gran cosa”, dichiara Gill. “È come
una spugna. Vuole capire e imparare e mi ha fatto domande su domande: ‘Quali
sono i parametri? Cosa possiamo fare? Come possiamo fare?’. Lavorare con
qualcuno del genere ti aiuta realmente perché rende il lavoro davvero
collaborativo”.
“Jen sa esattamente ciò che vuole. E, per qualunque domanda le venga
rivolta, ha una risposta. Così ci siamo trovati sulla strada giusta fin
dall’inizio”.
“Per i Rossi usiamo lanciafiamme veri. La tecnologia è la stessa di quelli
usati durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Si tratta di gas liquido sotto
pressione, emesso ad alta velocità, quindi ha una gittata di circa 20-25 metri.
Nel film vediamo i Rossi emettere la fiamma, in realtà vi è una zona cuscinetto
di 1,5 metri tra loro e il punto in cui appare la fiamma. Quando compare il
fuoco, brucia tutto ciò che si trova sul suo percorso”.
Parlando delle sequenze speciali, Gill spiega: “L’idea di fondo è che,
anche se questo è un mondo apocalittico, per i ragazzi non lo è. Vogliamo che
si percepisca un senso di speranza. Vogliamo far provare la sensazione che i
ragazzi combattono per cercare di migliorare le cose. Quindi, nelle sequenze
d’azione, tutto ciò che facciamo è finalizzato a mostrare al pubblico l’evoluzione
dei personaggi man mano che la storia va avanti. Tutti imparano quali sono i
loro poteri. Tutti imparano a controllarli. Tutti imparano a fare cose nuove”.
“Abbiamo provato a sviluppare l’azione progressivamente, in modo da non
concentrarla tutta all’inizio del film. Quindi, i poteri e l’azione
progrediscono con l’evoluzione della storia e, quando arriviamo al terzo atto,
siamo alle scene più spettacolari di tutto il film. È una sorta di viaggio per noi
tutti al fianco dei personaggi che devono conoscersi e scoprire ciò che ognuno
di loro può fare”.
“I ragazzi capiscono anche di avere un po’ paura l’uno dell’altro perché
non sanno se qualcuno sia intenzionato a consegnarli alla polizia. Devono
quindi imparare a fidarsi. Solo dopo potranno avventurarsi nel mondo e, aiutandosi
tra di loro, raggiungere la meta. Ma i cattivi sono sempre in agguato e i
ragazzi non sanno mai chi è un amico e chi è loro avversario”.
“Uno dei momenti più complessi
che abbiamo affrontato è stato la sequenza finale del terzo atto,
caratterizzata da molti personaggi che scagliano fiamme. Le fiamme devono raggiungere
un’estensione fino a oltre 20 metri e abbiamo dovuto usare lanciafiamme a zaino
alimentati da vero combustibile. Le prove hanno quindi richiesto moltissimo
tempo. Abbiamo provato per un paio di mesi prima di girare la sequenza finale,
a causa di tutti gli elementi di dettaglio che la componevano”.
Per le sequenze fuoristrada, Gill ha voluto il meglio del
meglio e ha chiamato lo stunt coordinator veterano, nonché fratello, Andy Gill e
il vecchio amico e stunt coordinator Gary Hymes.
“Quando Gwendoline Christie si è dovuta cimentare con la
sequenza dell’inseguimento in automobile, abbiamo fatto sembrare che fosse lei
a guidare”, spiega Andy. “In realtà, sono io che guido da una postazione
montata sul tettuccio dell’auto e dotata di volante, freni, acceleratore, ecc. Gwendoline
non ha i comandi nell’abitacolo, neanche i pedali. Deve solo sedere e fare
finta di guidare. Per questa ragione, abbiamo dovuto provare e riprovare, per
farle imparare i miei movimenti e reagire ad essi. È Jack a dare le indicazioni
per la sequenza a lei e anche a me, ad esempio slittare di 180° o cappottare e
andare fuori strada”.
Avvalendosi dell’esperienza fatta nella serie “Fast and Furious”, Gill e il suo team
sapevano che avrebbero usato macchine vere su strade vere. “Optando per
l’azione vera, il pubblico ha la sensazione di partecipare in prima persona”,
aggiunge Andy.
“Abbiamo usato un paio di piattaforme differenti. Una è una
struttura mobile, dotata di gabbiotto, da cui è possibile controllare il
veicolo. Può essere posizionata ovunque, sopra e attorno all’automobile, in
modo da poter guardare in tutte le direzioni. È come un pianale ma dotato di monitor
e sterzo. Il gabbiotto può essere posizionato liberamente, assicurando una
grande flessibilità per le inquadrature”.
“L’altra piattaforma è del tutto simile a un go-kart ed è
posizionata sul tettuccio del furgone. È il nostro pilota a guidare, ma è come
se il furgone fosse manovrato dagli attori all’interno dell’abitacolo”.
“Dal punto di vista della macchina da presa, sembra proprio
che siamo noi a guidare i mezzi in queste situazioni pericolose”, afferma la
Christie. “Ma il più delle volte alla guida c’è una controfigura che controlla
il veicolo da un gabbiotto, mentre noi ci limitiamo a recitare, anche se, a un
certo punto, inizia a fare un po’ paura. Voglio dire, stiamo parlando di un guidatore
che si trova sul sedile posteriore…”.
“Jack Gill e il suo team portano alla produzione la loro
esperienza e un grande spettacolo, penso che il film ne risulterà arricchito e
siamo davvero emozionati di averli con noi”, dichiara Levine.
LE SCENOGRAFIE
“Volevamo che le ambientazioni del film fossero reali, tangibili e
riconoscibili”, dichiara lo scenografo Russell Barnes. “Volevamo evitare un
film dal look eccessivamente levigato e uscire un po’ fuori dagli schemi che,
in passato, hanno caratterizzato alcuni film di questo genere”.
“Il Campo Thurmond (dove Ruby è reclusa all’inizio del film) ha dei toni
volutamente spenti e molto cupi perché volevamo introdurre un’esplosione di
colori quando la ragazza scappa”, prosegue Barnes. “Ruby è stata reclusa per
sei anni e, dopo la fuga, incontra un gruppo di ragazzi che sono per lei la
cosa più vicina a una famiglia. Ruby guarda il mondo con occhi sgranati attraverso
una lente diversa. Ci siamo focalizzati sul mostrare questa nuova visione
attraverso un’esplosione di colori. I toni diventano un po’ più vibranti e noi
accentuiamo il contrasto man mano che il nuovo mondo le si apre davanti”.
“Jennifer voleva che il film risultasse invitante e caldo, ambientato in un
mondo in cui si sta volentieri, specialmente quando Ruby fugge dal campo e si
sente libera, giovane e felice. Jen voleva evitare un altro film
post-apocalittico dai toni cupi, dall’aspetto freddo e poco invitante”.
Le riprese sono state effettuate ad Atlanta, dove la varietà di
ambientazioni disponibili si è dimostrata una manna per i realizzatori. “Atlanta
ci ha davvero dato una mano”, ammette Barnes, “grazie alla varietà di location nei
dintorni della città. Avevamo a disposizione una gamma di ambienti diversi ad
accompagnarci nel viaggio fra le zone suburbane e le aree industriali, con una
nota di post-apocalittico e anche un grande spazio nei teatri di posa”.
“La Georgia è una miniera di ambienti e paesaggi”, aggiunge il direttore
della fotografia Kramer Morgenthau. “Ha un aspetto lussureggiante, quasi
tropicale, grazie alle piogge abbondanti e alla presenza di molti alberi. È
come un’esplosione di verde, cosa molto importante nella visione di Jen, e la
crescita eccessiva di piante serve a dare una connotazione apocalittica ai
magazzini urbani smantellati”.
La geografia di Atlanta è stata particolarmente utile nel creare il rifugio
sicuro. La natura ha contribuito alla sua ideazione. “Per il rifugio dei
ragazzi era fondamentale trovare un bacino circondato da alberi, per introdurre
una visione di libertà e mostrare che si tratta di un luogo nascosto”, dichiara
Barnes. “Abbiamo trovato un magnifico angolino a Stone Mountain, appena fuori
Atlanta, che rispondeva a tutte le nostre necessità”, aggiunge Barnes. “L’area è
rigogliosa, con tutto il necessario per infondere in Ruby un sentimento di
speranza dopo la fuga dal Campo Thurmond”.
Pur volendo dare al film un’ambientazione contemporanea,
Barnes e la Nelson hanno deciso che i loro set avrebbero dovuto trasmettere la
sensazione di qualcosa mai visto prima. “Ho effettuato alcune ricerche sulle
prigioni e le basi militari, ma abbiamo cercato di creare un’ambientazione
unica, che non suggerisse alcun riferimento storico, perciò abbiamo costruito
tutto da cima a fondo”, spiega Barnes.
Nonostante fosse alla prima esperienza con la regista,
Barnes ha trovato la collaborazione molto fluida: “Dato il suo background nel
mondo dell’animazione, Jennifer è svelta ed efficiente; sa comunicare bene ciò
che ha in testa, il che semplifica il mio lavoro”, afferma lo scenografo. “I
suoi storyboard sono stati degli ottimi punti di partenza per tutti i reparti,
che sono riusciti a cogliere la sua visione e a creare il mondo che lei immaginava”.
“Vogliamo trasmettere
l’idea che la storia narrata nel film potrebbe divenire realtà, anche presto,
se accadesse qualcosa di pazzesco”, dichiara Levy. “Vogliamo che sembri il
nostro mondo, che lo sia in modo riconoscibile. E, secondo me, è proprio la
consapevolezza che le vicende del film potrebbero accadere nella realtà a
renderle ancora più inquietanti. I paesaggi suggeriscono un mondo naturale che,
nonostante sia privo di bambini, resta bellissimo, rigoglioso e pieno di
speranza”.
“Per me il punto centrale del libro è che la speranza ha la meglio sul
pregiudizio e, grazie ad essa, i ragazzi trovano una famiglia in cui si sentono
accettati perché gli altri capiscono quanto costa essere liberi”, aggiunge Levine.
“Jen è una persona
ottimista che vede il buono dell’umanità e credo che questo sia evidente nel
film”, afferma Morgenthau.
“THE
DARKEST MINDS sarà per il pubblico un viaggio davvero entusiasmante. È
pieno di azione e avventura, con effetti visivi straordinari, scene di battaglie
e i poteri dei ragazzi in mostra. Ma penso che gli spettatori vivranno
un’esperienza profondamente emozionante perché, nonostante le molte scene
spettacolari e le sequenze da brivido, il cuore del film è la ricerca da parte
dei ragazzi di un senso di appartenenza, fino a quando scoprono che, in
definitiva, sono essi stessi la famiglia cui appartengono”, conclude Levy.
ABOUT THE CAST
AMANDLA STENBERG/ RUBY DALY
Amandla Stenberg first gained recognition for her role as Rue in
Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games”, alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and
Josh Hutcherson. After the success of the film, Amandla earned a Teen Choice
Award in 2012 with Jennifer Lawrence for Film – Choice Chemistry. She was also
nominated for an NAACP Image Award and a Black Reel Award in 2013 for her
performance as Rue.
Amandla will next be seen in “Everything Everything”, MGM and Alloy
Entertainment's adaptation of the Nicola Yoon book of the same title. The film
follows Maddie, played by Amandla, who is a teen with a rare disease that
causes her to be allergic to most everything. She has spent her life hiding at
her home only surrounded by her mother and nurse, until she begins to fall in
love with the boy next door, Olly, played by Nick Robinson. Filming took place
in Vancouver with Director Stella Meghie, and the film is scheduled for
worldwide release in May 2017.
In January 2016 Amandla appeared in the independent film “As You Are”,
which premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Dramatic
Competition. “As You Are” went on to win the Special Jury Award for the 2016
Festival. The film is the telling, and retelling, of a relationship between
three teenagers as it traces the course of their friendship through a
construction of disparate memories prompted by a police investigation; it is
directed by Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, and co-stars Owen Campbell and Charlie
Heaton. The film was released in
February 2017.
Amandla recently wrapped filming on “Where Hands Touch” with director Amma
Asante, a period romantic-drama set in the 1940s. The story focuses on the
relationship between a mixed-race German girl and an SS officer in Berlin.
Amandla is currently filming Fox’s “The Darkest Minds”, based on the young
adult novels by Alexandra Bracken of the same title. The dystopian trilogy
takes place after a mysterious disease kills most of America’s child and
teenage population. Amandla will star as Ruby, a teenager with telekinetic
powers who escapes and joins a group of kids who are running from the government.
The film is Directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson.
She is also attached to star in Fox 2000's “The Hate U Give” based on the
upcoming debut novel from Angela Thomas. The story follows a teen girl who
attends a suburban prep school and must deal with the aftermath of witnessing a
police offer shoot her unarmed best friend. When called to testify in court,
she must face the consequences of what she does or doesn't say. The story is
inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, and George Tillman Jr. is set to
direct the script by Audrey Wells.
Before “The Hunger Games”, Amandla made her film debut in the breakout role
of young Cataleya Restrepo (played by Zoe Saldana) in Sony’s “Colombiana”. In
2013, Amandla had a guest starring role as Macey, the daughter of Captain Frank
Irving, on Fox’s Sleepy Hollow. The following year, Amandla lent her voice to
the character of Bia in Twentieth Century Fox’s “Rio 2”, alongside Jesse
Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway. And then in Summer 2015 she starred alongside
comedian Craig Robinson as Halle Foster on the NBC comedy series Mr. Robinson.
In addition to acting, Amandla has been globally praised for her crusade
towards improving society and sparking thoughtful conversation, using social
media as a platform to spread social awareness and knowledge. She has shared
personal essays on topics such as cultural appropriation, intersectional
feminism, biracial identity and beauty standards to name a few. For her wisdom,
Amandla was named one of TIME Magazine’s 2015 + 2016 Most Influential Teens and
named 2015’s Feminist Celebrity of the Year by the Ms. Foundation for Women.
Furthermore, DAZED Magazine proclaimed Amandla to be “one of the most

Amandla recently teamed with Stranger Comics to co-create “Niobe: She is
Life,” a graphic novel about a ‘badass’ female warrior who is half human and
half elf. It is the first comic book that has a black female writer, black
female illustrator, and black female lead character.
In 2016 Amandla became one of the faces of Stella McCartney’s new
fragrance, POP, alongside Lourdes Leon, Grimes & Kenya Kinski-Jones. On the musical side Amandla plays violin and
sings in the folk band, Honeywater, along with Zander Hawley. The group put out
their first EP in July 2015.

HARRIS DICKINSON/ LIAM
Harris Dickinson was born in London in June 1996. From an early age, he
expressed a keen interest in both acting and filmmaking. He trained in theatre
with RAW Acting Academy and partook of the highly respected LAMDA examination
program.
At the age of 16, he received council funding to write and direct his first
short film. In 2014, he performed in Pauline McLynn's Angels at London's Royal
National Theatre. In 2015, he was cast in his first feature film “The Medium”,
and then co-starred in Brad Anderson's Home for Jerry Bruckheimer Television.
Having just finished Steve Mclean's BFI feature “Postcards From London”, Harris
now stars as Frankie in Eliza Hittman’s “Beach Rats”, which premiered at the
2017 Sundance Film Festival. Harris will next star in “The Darkest Minds” for
Fox, opposite Amandla Stenberg, before going into production on Danny Boyle’s
FX limited series, Trust, starring alongside Hillary Swank and Donald
Sutherland.

MIYA CECH/ ZU or SUZUME
Born Miyako Claire in Tokyo, Japan on March 4, 2007 Miya was adopted by
American parents at only 2 months old. She made her way to her new home in
Davis, California where her loving family of 6 raised her. As a toddler, she was approached by a print,
modeling and commercial agency in San Francisco. Shortly after Miya was signed
with a Los Angeles based agency and she began to travel between LA and San
Francisco for work.
Miya has been featured in campaigns for Gap, Old Navy, Ralph Lauren,
Sketchers, Gwen Stefani, Disney, Barbie and Gymboree. After appearing in several national
commercials, Miya expressed an interest in trying her hand at acting. At age 7, Miya booked her first acting role
on CBS's Hawaii Five-0, playing a young Kono Kalakaua. Since then she has been seen on Nickelodeon's
The Thundermans and FX’s American Horror Story. In addition she appeared on two
episodes of ABC’s American Housewife where Miya plays the daughter of the
actress and comedian, Ali Wong. After
much hard work and lots of travel time to Los Angeles, Miya finally landed her
first leading role in the 20th Century Fox Feature Film Trilogy based of the
book series titled, The Darkest Minds.
Miya will be playing the role of 9 year old ZU, a feral child with the
ability to short circuit any electronics just by touch. “The Darekst Minds” is
set to be released in Sept, 2018.
In her spare time, Miya enjoys being a normal 10 year old- playing with her
brother and two sisters, painting, sketching, dancing and learning to play the
ukulele.

A Grammy® and Golden Globes® nominated actress, singer and songwriter—Mandy
Moore continues to enjoy versatility in a career marked by memorable
performances in family-friendly fare, independent features, and studio films.
Moore recently wrapped the first season of critically acclaimed NBC show
This Is Us. The series follows a group of people born on the same day,
including Rebecca (Moore) and Jack, a married couple expecting triplets in
Pittsburgh. This role earned Moore a Golden Globe Award nomination while the
show received recognition with a Golden Globe nomination and a Critics’ Choice
Award nomination. The show has been renewed for two additional seasons.

release on June 23, 2017. Moore is currently in production for Twentieth
Century Fox’s sci-fi thriller, “The Darkest Minds”, in which she stars as
“Cate” alongside Amandla Stenberg and Patrick Gibson. After a disease kills 98%
of America's children, the surviving 2% develop superpowers and are placed in
internment camps. A 16-year-old girl escapes her camp and joins a group of
other teens on the run from the government. The film is set to release on
September 14, 2018.
Moore first came to national attention as a recording artist in 1999 with
the release of her debut album, So Real, which reached platinum status in a

Diane Keaton; John Turturro's musical,
“Romance and Cigarettes” with James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet
and Mary-Louise Parker; and “Chasing Liberty”, which earned Moore a World
Soundtrack Award nomination.
Beyond film, Moore’s notable television appearances include ABC’s beloved
drama, Grey's Anatomy, NBC's popular comedy Scrubs, and a 5-episode arc on the
HBO hit series Entourage where she played herself. In addition, Moore also lent
her voice to the dark humor comedy High School USA! which premiered this past
summer.
Moore is set to star in the holiday television film Christmas in Conway,
opposite Andy Garcia and Mary Louise Parker. The film debuts December 1, 2013
on the Hallmark channel.
Currently, Moore is top lining Disney Junior’s new animated television
series, Sheriff Callie’s Wild West in which she voices the title character. The
show marks the first time Disney has debuted a new series as an app before its
broadcast debut in January 2014 on the Disney Channel and Disney Junior.
As an Ambassador for PSI’s Five & Alive Organization, Moore is deeply
involved in its initiative which addresses health crises facing children under
the age of five and their families.

MARK O’BRIEN/ ROB
Actor and filmmaker MARK O’BRIEN is best known to Canadian audiences for
his role as Des Courtney on the long-running CBC award-winning comedy-drama TV
series Republic of Doyle. He was twice nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award
for Best Male Performance.
In the U.S., Mark played Tom Rendon on the AMC drama Halt and Catch Fire.
The series is set in the early 1980s, in the halcyon days of the computer tech
revolution. Rendon, is a savvy IT department head at a law firm, who has a
passion for gaming. O’Brien has appeared in several other hit series including
NBC’s Hannibal, where he played a recurring role as Randall Tier, a psychotic
serial killer. He has also been featured on episodes of CTV’s Saving Hope,
CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries and Syfy’s Warehouse 13 as well as the Syfy series
Killjoys.
O’Brien’s directorial credits include select episodes of Republic of Doyle,
as well as nine short films including Better People, which showcased in 10 film
festivals across Canada and the United States, and Sweetieface, seen in film
festivals all across the Canada. Both films received critical acclaim, winning
multiple awards including Best Short Film at the 2013 and 2014
WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival, Best Emerging Filmmaker at the
2013 Lakeshorts International Film Festival and Best Short Film at the 2013
Atlantic Film Festival. He was nominated for another Canadian Comedy Award as
Best Director of a television series for his work on Republic of Doyle.
O’Brien starred in Canadian indie films “The End of Days, Inc.” a dark
comedy with a supernatural spin, which premiered at the USA Film Festival in
Dallas Texas, “Len & Company” directed by Tim Godsall, “The Dark Stranger”
alongside Katie Findlay, Enrico Colantoni and Stephen McHattie, and the Sundance
Film Festival selection “Grown Up Movie Star” alongside Orphan Black’s, Tatiana
Maslany. Last year, Mark shot the 4th lead in Paramount’s “Arrival”, directed
by Denis Villeneuve (“Prisoners”, “Enemies”) and opposite Amy Adams, Jeremy
Renner and Forrest Whitaker. Most recently, Mark shot supporting roles in
Andrew Niccol’s upcoming feature film “Anon”, alongside Clive Owen and Amanda
Seyfried; “State Like Sleep”, opposite Michael Shannon, Luke Evans, and Ben
Foster; and “Kin”, opposite James Franco, Dennis Quaid, and Zoe Kravitz. He is
also one of the leads in Bron Studios’ upcoming sci-fi thriller “Paralle”l.
Mark can next be seen playing Max Miner on the Sony/Amazon series The Last
Tycoon, opposite Matt Bomer, Kelsey Grammer, and Rosemarie Dewitt.
Mark holds a Bachelor of Arts from Memorial University of Newfoundland with
a major in English Literature. In May, 2015 the University awarded him with the
Horizon Alumni Award for Best Career Achievement for an Alumni under the age of
35.
GWENDOLINE CHRISTIE/ LADY JANE
Gwendoline Christie was born in Worthing, West Sussex, England and trained
in dance and gymnastics as a child. She graduated from Drama Centre London with
a First Class BA (Hons) in 2005 and her first job was with Declan Donellan in
'Great Expectations' at the Royal Shakespeare Company that autumn. She then
went on to work in regional theatre, world tours and the West End. Her striking
appearance motivated photographer Polly Borland to collaborate with her as the
subject of a noted series of photographs.
In 2011 Gwendoline was cast in the role of Brienne of Tarth in the
successful HBO TV adaptation Game of Thrones (2011). She plays the role of
Commander Lyme in the last two Hunger Games movies: “The Hunger Games:
Mockingjay - Part 1” (2014) and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2” (2015).
She has also been cast as Captain Phasma in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”
(2015) and “Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie” (2016). Gwendoline is the face of
the Vivienne Westwood A/W 2015 campaign.

JENNIFER YUH NELSON/ DIRECTOR
“The Darkest Minds” marks director Jennifer Yuh Nelson’s first live-action
feature.
Before that Nelson had gained critical acclaim for her career in animation.
She made her feature film directorial debut with “Kung Fu Panda 2” (2011),
which earned more than $665 million at the worldwide box-office as well as an
Oscar nomination for best animated feature, and an Annie Award for best
director. She continued on to direct the franchise’s successful follow-up “Kung
Fu Panda 3” (2016) alongside Alessandro Carloni.
Nelson had previously lent her talents to a variety of DreamWorks Animation
pictures, including as head of story for “Kung Fu Panda” (2008), for which she
also directed the opening sequence consisting of a two-minute hand-drawn
segment. She also was a story artist on “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron’
(2002) and “Madagascar” (2005).
Prior to joining DreamWorks Animation, Nelson worked at HBO Animation and
served as director, story artist and character designer for HBO’s animated
series “Spawn,” which won an Emmy Award in 1999 for Outstanding Animated
Program. She also worked as an illustrator for the live action film Dark City
(1998) for Mystery Clock Productions.
Born in South Korea, Nelson and her family moved to California where she
attended California State University, Long Beach receiving a BFA in
Illustration.

Dan Levine is a Partner at Shawn Levy’s production company, 21 Laps
Entertainment, based at Fox. Levine produced the critically acclaimed,
worldwide box office hit "Arrival." Directed by Denis Villeneuve and
starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, “Arrival” was nominated for eight Academy
Awards, including Best Picture, as well as nine BAFTA awards, including Best
Picture.
Levine recently produced the drama “Kodachrome,” directed by Mark Raso and
staring Ed Harris, Jason Sudeikis, and Elizabeth Olsen, which premiered on
Netflix in April.
Prior to that, he produced Fox’s “Why Him?” written and directed by John

Born and raised in San Diego and a 2005 graduate of Cornell University
(B.A. Arts & Sciences), Dan Cohen began his entertainment career as an
assistant at The Firm in 2005 and then joined Sidney Kimmel Entertainment in
2007 where he began as an assistant and was later promoted to creative
executive.
Cohen joined Shawn Levy's 21 Laps in 2010, where he now works as a partner
at the company. In 2014, Cohen was a member of The Hollywood Reporter’s “35
under 35” Next Gen class.
His producing credits include the breakout Netflix series STRANGER THINGS
(which in its first season won the Producers Guild and SAG Ensemble Award for

Executive Producer, John Starke is currently working on Fox’s upcoming
adaptation of Alexandra Bracken’s popular YA novel, “The Darkest Minds”
directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson. He served in the same capacity on the hit
films “Sicario” and “Prisoners” both directed by Denis Villeneuve along with
“P.S. I Love You” directed by Richard LaGravenese and “Step Up” directed by
Anne Fletcher, among others.
A native of New York, Starke got his start as a production assistant and
worked his way through the ranks as a location coordinator and a unit

Kramer Morgenthau ASC has traveled the globe shooting over twenty feature
films and numerous television, documentary and commercial assignments. His
recent feature projects include “Terminator Genisys” ,”Thor: The Dark World”
with director Alan Taylor, “Chef” with director Jon Favreau, “Feast of Love”
with three time Academy Award winning director “Robert Benton”, “Fracture” with
director Gregory Hoblit.
In the world of television Morgenthau has been nominated for 5 Emmy awards
and 4 ASC awards. He recently shot Game of Thrones (HBO) for which he won an
Outstanding Achievement Award in Cinematography by the American Society of
Cinematographers. He also shot and was nominated for Emmy Awards for Boardwalk
Empire (HBO), Too Big To Fail (HBO), Flash Forward (ABC), and Life on Mars
(ABC). In 2011 Morgenthau was named one of 10 Cinematographers to watch by
Variety magazine. In August 2013 he was featured in Variety’s Below the the
Line Impact report.
Morgenthau has worked with a wide range of directors including James
Mangold, Tim Van Patten, David Nutter, Curtis Hanson, Brian Kirk, Spike Lee,
Gary Fleder, Barbara Kopple, and George Hickenlooper. Some of the
cinematographer's other feature film credits include: “The Express”, “The Man
From Elysian Fields”, “The Big Brass Ring”, “Empire”, “Godsend”, and “Havoc”.
Morgenthau began his career shooting documentaries based out of New York
City. In 1996, Morgenthau shot the Academy Award nominated “Small Wonders” for
two-time Oscar winning director Allan Miller. That same year a feature film
Morgenthau shot, “Joe and Joe”, was accepted to the Sundance film festival. The
cinematographer soon became a regular entrant of the festival with some seven
features and documentaries. He eventually migrated to Los Angeles to further
pursue feature films.
Morgenthau grew up in Cambridge MA, and was introduced to the world of
documentary film at a young age. His father Henry Morgenthau produced
documentaries for flagship PBS station WGBH in Boston. Morgenthau often tagged
along on location shoots with his father to Africa, Europe and many other
places. His father also introduced him to the world of art and painting; they
spent many days in art museums and galleries around the world.
Morgenthau's mother, Ruth, gave him an early introduction to global
politics and rural development. She was a Polish Jewish refugee of Nazi
occupied Vienna, Austria who went on to become an advisor to three American
presidents, a professor of African politics and a forerunner in sustainable
rural development. Kramer Morgenthau's background has had a profound effect on
the types of projects he has chosen to work on.
Morgenthau is a member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, The Directors
Guild of America, The American Society of Cinematographers, The Academy of
Television Arts and Sciences and the International Cinematographers Guild. He
lives in Los Angeles with his wife and their young twins.

Maryann Brandon has experience working as an editor, director, and producer
in film, animation and television. Her last film “Passengers” was released
December 2016. Her other work as editor can be seen on Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars
The Force Awakens”, Universal’s “Endless Love”, Paramount’s “Star Trek” and
“Star Trek Into Darkness”, and the DreamWorks animated films “How to Train Your
Dragon” and “Kung Fu Panda 2”. She has also edited JJ Abram’s “Super 8”, and
“Mission Impossible Iii”.
She received an OSCAR nomination, EDDY nomination, and won the Saturn
Award, for her work on “Star Wars The Force Awakens”. Other awards and
nominations include “Star Trek”, “Star Trek into Darkness”, and “How to Train
Your Dragon”. She collaborated with JJ Abrams on Alias which she received an
EMMY nomination for Outstanding Single Camera Picture Editing for a Drama
Series.
In addition to editing Brandon served as Director on two episodes of Alias,
(“The Road Home” &“After Six”), and served as the Producer for the fourth
season. Her previous feature credits include, “The Jane Austen Book Club”, “A
Thousand Acres”, “Grumpier Old Men”, “Born To Be Wild”, and “Bingo”.

Dean Zimmerman, born in the city of angels, not only lived in the
entertainment capital of the world but grew up among the stars being the son of
legendary Academy Award Nominee Film Editor Don Zimmerman. As a young child,
Dean travelled with his family to visit his father on location, truly
experiencing the “entertainment industry life,” not knowing that one day he
would be living the same life with his wife and 2 daughters.
Dean has made his own mark working for over 25 years in the industry,
editing many top feature films including all the “Night at the Museum” films,
“Date Night”, “Real Steel”, “The Internship” and “Jumper”. Earlier this year
Dean finished working on the feature comedy “Holmes and Watson” starring Will
Ferrell and John C. Riley due out in theaters this Fall.
Dean also worked on the 1st season of the mega hit Sci-Fi Netflix series
“Stranger Things” which won him an Emmy for Outstanding Editing for a Non-Commercial
Drama Series. He also was nominated for an “Eddie” award and won the HPA award
for the same show. Dean is currently editing the Feature film “The Darkest
Minds” which releases August 3rd and after that will return to the Netflix
series “Stranger Things” for season 3. Dean was asked to become a member of
American Cinema Editors after his nomination and is a member of the Television
Academy.
RUSSELL BARNES/ PRODUCTION DESIGNER
Russell Barnes began his creative career in New Zealand where he owned a
prop fabrication business.
He designed several commercials and music videos, and he soon relocated to
New York City to continue his career in film.
He designed his first feature film “The Best and The Brightest,"
starring Neil Patrick Harris.
After designing his first 3-D film “The Mortician”, he went on to design
his second 3-D film “Hellbenders”, directed by J.T.Petty and starring Clancy
Brown, which premiered at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival's Midnight Madness
program.
He then designed Jim Mickle's "We Are What We Are," a dark
thriller based in upstate New York, which premiered in 2013 at the Sundance
Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival.
Following that film,
Russell traveled to Alabama to design the supernatural thriller
"Oculus", produced by Intrepid Pictures and directed by Michael
Flanagan.
Russell then reunited with director Jim Mickle to design "Cold In
July", a western thriller based on the novel by Joe Lansdale, starring
Michael C. Hall, Don Johnson, and Sam Shepard.
Following the path of his first collaboration with Mickle, “Cold”
premiered in competition at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and Cannes Film
Festival.
Russell traveled to Washington state to design Matt Ross's “Captain
Fantastic.” starring Viggo Mortenson and produced by Electric City.
Barnes also designed the series Hap and Leonard for AMC/Sundance, based on
the popular 1980's fiction series written by Joe Lansdale, starring Christina
Hendricks and Michael K. Williams.
MARY CLAIRE HANNAN/ COSTUME DESIGNER
Originally from San Francisco, Mary Claire Hannan was educated at the
prestigious Fashion Institute of Design (FIDM) and at the Université de la
Sorbonne in Paris. Hannan started her film career as the Costume Supervisor on
Quentin Tarantino's “Reservoir Dogs”. Hannan quickly moved up the ranks,
working with Tarantino on three more films, including designing the iconic
costumes for the award-winning crime thriller “Jackie Brown”.
Hannan has since been the Costume Designer on a wide variety of features, including
Academy Award Best Picture nominee “The Kids Are All Right”, Wes Craven's
“Red Eye”, and Sean Penn's biographic drama “Into the Wild”, for which she was
nominated for a Costume Designer Guild Award for her work. Hannan has
collaborated with acclaimed director David Ayer on two features: “Sabotage” and
the groundbreaking “End Of Watch”. Hannan's other noteworthy credits include
the crime drama series The Unit, created by David Mamet and the enormously
successful teen drama “The Fault in Our Stars”, directed by Josh Boone.
JACK GILL/ STUNT COORDINATOR/ 2ND UNIT DIRECTOR
Jack Gill has created some of the movie industries' most memorable action
sequences. He directed 2nd unit and was the stunt coordinator on blockbuster
movies such as “Jumanji”, “Fate of the Furious”, “Furious 7”, “Ride Along 2”,
“Ride Along”, “Fast Five”, “The Hangover Part III”, “Date Night”, “Wild Hogs”,
“Austin Powers in Goldmember”, “Showtime”, “Money Train” and many more. As a
stuntman, he has jumped cars and motorcycles through walls of wood, glass and
flame on “Knight Rider” and “The Dukes of Hazzard”; he has taken falls from
buildings as high as twelve stories, and jumped from exploding boats and
mountain tops; he has flown through the air hanging from helicopter struts and
streaked through the sky in the F-16 Fighter aircraft. Jack is a past President
of Stunts Unlimited, a member of the Directors Guild of America, Screen Actors
Guild and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and has been
nominated and won many stunt awards over the past years. His preparation,
precision and safety practices are well-known and followed throughout the
business. He and his wife, actress Morgan Brittany, their daughter Katie Gill
and son Cody Gill, reside in the hills of Agoura, California.
